  • A free admission lecture made all the more important as the United States changes leadership and confronts a world ready for change.

At no other moment in recent history have relations between the United States, Europe, and many other parts of the global community been as strained as during the administration of President George W. Bush, at least since 2002. Within less than a decade, the United States - after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 - first enjoyed the solidarity of the vast majority of the whole world. Then, with its preparation for the war against Iraq, the international image of the USA hit rock bottom for seven long years. Now, after the election of Barack Obama, the United States is suddenly surprised to discover that it is (nearly) everybody's darling again.

The Austrian historian Reinhold Wagnleitner, who has researched, published, and taught trans-Atlantic cultural, social, economic, and political influences as well as played (mostly) American music as an amateur musician for most of his life, will analyze the dynamics of these highly complex sets of associations. While no other relationship has ever been more deeply investigated than the relations between Europe and the United States of America, no other interconnection has ever resulted in more abstruse misunderstandings. In order to shed light on this abyss of near-mythical proportions, Wagnleitner will synthesize a vast body of global opinion polls collected during the last decades with a magical history tour through trans-Atlantic perceptions, prejudices, stereotypes, and clichés, which have been developing since the age of Columbus.
